Based on Jean Anouilh's successful West End play, Waltz of the Toreadors is a rumbustious comedy with a strong romantic theme concerning the life and loves of an ageing General. Peter Sellers gives a skilfully-drawn performance as the would-be libertine General Fitzjohn, playing against Margaret Leighton in a spectacularly commanding role as his bedridden 'professional invalid' of a wife. With a BAFTA-nominated screenplay by Wolf Mankowitz, Waltz of the Toreadors is gorgeously captured on film by award-winning director John Guillermin.

It is the beginning of the twentieth century and age has not dulled the libido of General Leo Fitzjohn - not only does he have to contend with a querulous harpy of a bedridden wife and a long-time female companion (Mlle. Ghislaine), but his eye is caught by every nubile young lady he passes. The subtleties of hypocrisy go straight over his head, however, when he discovers his wife has been writing love letters to her doctor. Galloping off to give him a damn good thrashing, the General is stopped in his tracks when the Doctor tells him his wife's behaviour is normal for a psychopath...
