Way to the Stars
In 1940, during the Battle of Britain, Peter Penrose (John Mills – Ryan’s Daughter), a recently qualified flyer with the RAF, joins a squadron based in the Midlands, and quickly discovers the harsh reality of every day life during wartime. When his squad commander, Flight Lieutenant David Archdale (Michael Redgrave – The Dam Busters), dies in a raid, leaving behind his wife and a young son, Peter becomes disillusioned with the idea of marriage, and leaves the base without explaining to his fiancée why he has broken off their relationship.
Unlike many of the films about the air war, the action never leaves the ground, but manages to brilliantly capture the tragic atmosphere of war-time. As Penrose comes to terms with the fact that he has survived whilst others have died, the film sustains a mood of both hope and fear, interspersed with moments of panic, terror, comedy and relief.

An outstanding example of the British war film at its best, The Way to the Stars features compelling performances from both Redgrave and Mills, with solid support from Stanley Holloway (My Fair Lady), Basil Radford (The Lady Vanishes), Rosamund John (Green for Danger) and, in a small role, Trevor Howard (Brief Encounter) as Squadron Leader Carter.
