    Whodunnit?: The Complete Series 1

This highly popular, light-hearted panel game invited viewers to play detective every week between 1972 and 1978, pitting their wits against a panel of celebrity sleuths - hosted initially by Edward Woodward, and later by Jon Pertwee - to solve a fictitious murder mystery.

The show’s brilliantly original formula, devised by comedians Lance Percival and Jeremy Lloyd (and revived in the 1990s for Cluedo), presented short dramas laden with clues to be pieced together by the panellists, who would then question the characters involved and finally point the finger at the most likely suspect; lively repartee was the order of the day.

Presented here is the very first series (and pilot), with distinguished contributors appropriately including archetypal TV policeman Frank Windsor (Z Cars) and Police 5 presenter Shaw Taylor, Kingsley Amis, legendary newsreader Reginald Bosanquet, Woodward’s Callan co-star Russell Hunter, and real-life private eye Anne Summer.

I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD set. The episodes (7 - including the pilot episode) are almost in "prototype" stage in this first series, varying from a bit clunky to quite atmospheric, but impressively each episode does improves on the last, as if the production team were learning and trying new things as they went. The banter between the panelists and host improves as time goes on. While Edward Woodward is an amiable host, he lacks the suave confidence that Jon Pertwee would bring when he took over the following year. A couple of the solutions are a bit obvious, but most are a good mix of clues and red herrings to work your way through (the beauty of DVD is that unlike when it was originally shown you can go back and re-watch any scenes you might want to, or pause the programme during what would have been the ad breaks to think things through, or maybe discuss clues with whoever you're watching with, before allowing the show to continue and see whether you got the solution right, which makes this show ideal for modern interactive viewing). Hopefully, this will be the beginning of more releases (the series ran from 1972 to 1978), as the best is yet to come, once they'd nailed down the perfect dramatic format and settled on Patrick Mower and Anouska Hempel as regular panelists.
