    Smith: The Complete Series

Meet Smith - a London street urchin and apprentice highwayman. Hunted, hounded and homeless, he is on the run from the law with a mysterious document which, he senses, is of great value. Smith lives in constant fear of the hangman of Tyburn, and is in mortal danger from other, secret, enemies...

This 1970 Thames Television adventures series, adapted from the Phoenix Award-winning children’s novel by Leon Garfi eld and directed by Michael Currer-Briggs, offers a vivid depiction of the precarious, marginal existence of the eighteenth-century highwayman.

    A quality production

'Smith' is great. The script is good and very true to the book. The dialogue seems to come straight from the 1700s. The writer does not try to put modern words into the characters' mouths, so you believe you are watching something that actually happened. My family watch this series over and over again. Mr Mansfield the 'old blind mole in the 'ole' is a very memorable creation. Smith himself is an endearing young urchin, like a young Jack Sheppard. There is a pre Half Hot Mum role for Windsor Davies as the warder of Newgate Gaol and he suits the part. All in all, I'm glad we bought this dvd.
