New Incomplete Complete and Utter History of Britain (The)

"Certainly a must-buy for fans of archive comedy” British Comedy Guide

    ★★★★ Entertainment Focus

Written by and starring Michael Palin and Terry Jones, The Complete and Utter History of Britain was a formative influence on television comedy and Monty Python's Flying Circus in particular. Made in black and white in the same year that Python became part of the national consciousness, this rarely seen comedy takes a typically skewed look at British history – and reports historical events as if television had been around to cover them at the time! And so we find Richard the Lionheart relating his Crusading exploits in the manner of a laddish holidaymaker, medieval adverts and film trailers, and William the Conquerer engaging in post-match analysis (following an unspectacular scuffle in which King Harold is finally felled by a rogue baguette...).

The New Incomplete and Utter History of Britain

In 2013, Palin and Jones revisited their series for this release. Taking the roles of joint narrators they comically, and seamlessly, link back to the best of the existing material shot by their younger selves in 1969 to create a brand-new feature: The Incomplete and Utter History of Britain 2013!

CUHB - History reported as if it had happened today

The idea behind The Complete And Utter History Of Britain, or CUHB, was that historical events were reported in a contemporary way. It was the start of the writing partnership of Terry Jones and Michael Palin, who wrote and starred in the show. They were assisted by a presenter and a historian.
Today 2.5 hours of material survive: four 25 minute episodes, although one of those is a re-edited version of two others (the series was reduced from seven to six episodes before broadcast, but the unaired original episodes were saved by the director on an early home video system). The last 4 episodes are lost, but their filmed inserts still exist. They are out of context and are sometimes missing effects and music, like the Shakespeare sketch. In addition there is a sketch from an earlier show which clearly plays with the same idea and that's been cited as its inspiration.
Almost all of the material (except director's episode 2) was known to collectors (there were several fan restorations of the first episode). But often they were download based on VHS copies of the 16mm film. But with this release I hope to see all 150 minutes of it in good quality, taken directly from the source and restored where necessary.
