Cedar Tree (The): The Complete Series 1 Volume 3

Airing at the tail-end of the hottest summer in living memory, The Cedar Tree was one of those budget-friendly programmes (like Emmerdale Farm) which livened up the early afternoon on ITV for housewives, perennial students, the steadfastly unemployable and kids bunking off school. Also like Emmerdale Farm its reach very definitely exceeded its grasp, with the series becoming immensely successful - 108 half hour episodes over two series before it was reformatted to fit an hour-long primetime Sunday evening slot during its final run in 1978.

With production on the globally popular Upstairs Downstairs concluding in the winter of 1975, Alfred Shaughnessy's next project once again used his own, early background to inform his portrayal of a middle-class family during the turbulent social upheaval of the 1930s. Featuring consistently watchable performances from Philip Latham and Susan Engel as the parents of three daughters (one clever, one flighty and one introvert), The Cedar Tree's extended run of episodes allowed for the extensive character development and continuing plot threads that only a long-running series could allow. Scripts by Shaughnessy and other drama stalwarts (Jeremy Paul, TEB Clarke, Pembroke Duttson, Felicity Douglas) ensure that what was originally created as mid-afternoon filler can certainly hold its own amongst the prime-time dramas of the period.

    PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Created by Upstairs Downstairs’ Alfred Shaughnessy, The Cedar Tree is a study of one fictional aristocratic family, the Bournes of Larkfield Manor, focusing particularly on daughters Elizabeth (21), Anne (18), and Victoria (16).

Dependent on their parents for income and bound by the remnants of the previous century’s code of social behaviour, they represent a small backwater of Thirties life. The girls’ great hope is to find a suitable husband, and their expectations are high; but who is to know that what awaits all women at the end of the ‘devil’s decade’ is war?

A huge success for ITV in the 1970s, The Cedar Tree picked up the reins for classy period drama from Upstairs Downstairs and is the precursor to today’s highly popular costume dramas such as Cranford and Downton Abbey.
