    REVIEW

Filmed, for the most part, during the hottest summer in living memory, 25 Years is a celebration of not only the Silver Jubilee of Britain's (currently second longest reigning) monarch but also Britain itself and the massive social and developmental changes it has gone through during that quarter of a century. Produced and directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Peter Morley, 25 Years - as its subtitle Impressions - 1952-1977 suggests - gives a highly individual look at both the monarchy and the country over this period of change, using a combination of newly-shot footage and archive newsreel.

Morley's track record is impeccable - it was he who directed the television coverage of Churchill's funeral and created shows on Mountbatten, Harold Wilson and Auschwitz survivor Kitty Hart - and it was this body of work got him the offer of creating a brand new "jubilee film" for Bernard Delfont, who was head of EMI at that time. Morley's royal contacts enabled him to gain unprecedented access to the Queen's Commonwealth visit of Canada (for the opening of the Montreal Olympic Games) as well as her visit to Boston for the 1766 Bicentennial celebrations and the resulting film was gala premiered (with Prince Charles officiating) in London on 16th February 1977.

    PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Directed by acclaimed, multi-award-winning filmmaker Peter Morley, 25 Years is an impressionistic survey of the years from the Queen’s accession to the throne in 1952 through to her Silver Jubilee in 1977, presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements.

Combining archive and contemporary footage – including that of the royal visit to Canada and the US in 1976, the bicentenary year of American independence – the film explores the monarchy through a quarter-century which saw the conquest of Everest, the development of television as a mass medium, the first supersonic flight and space exploration.

Through good times and bad, and tumultuous changes for better or for worse, one factor remained constant: the monarchy, in the person of Queen Elizabeth II, provided a continuity and stability which this film celebrates in her Silver Jubilee year.
