    Crown Court: Volume 1

Arguably one of the most memorable legal dramas in the history of British television, Crown Court was originally broadcast on ITV and was water cooler TV. The show used fictional cases but the jurors were actually members of the public. Different endings were filmed to account for the verdict of the jury and this added an intensity and twist to the normal courtroom dramas of that era.

This volume contains the first twelve stories (in production order) and features compelling cases which cover a wide spectrum of what would come before a courtroom - from GBH to drugs and from voluntary euthanasia to espionage.

Crown Court is such a simple (and cheap) idea you wonder why it has never been resurrected - if you have never seen it, it is a dramatic enactment of a fictional trial in front of a "real" jury (well, real actual 1970's people anyway) who then deliver the verdict.

Watching these shows again is like bumping into an old friend you had quite forgotten. Cleverly-written, well-acted and with the odd "fluff" (which actually adds to the realism).

The striking thing about the verdicts is how liberal we once were - one "guilty" verdict I was quite sure of didn't happen. Clearly, these were more innocent times. These make excellent viewing alongside older episodes of "Poirot" & "The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes".
