A celebrated but controversial talent, international filmmaker Theo van Gogh won the Dutch Academy Award for best direction an unprecedented four times. After his shocking murder by Islamic extremists, producers Bruce Weiss and Gijs van de Westelaken decided to fulfill Van Gogh’s dream project of remaking what are arguably his three best films in English with top Hollywood talent.

Van Gogh’s films are invariably – by turns – shocking, outrageous and funny but, most importantly, enduringly human: Blind Date is a multi-award winning emotional tour-de-force that follows the increasingly bizarre encounters of a man and woman who meet regularly at the Amsterdam Hilton. Arranging their meetings via personal ads in a newspaper, the couple go on a series of ‘blind dates’, pretending to be strangers when they meet; playing various roles, they talk, flirt and fight with each other, as clues emerge as to the dark shadow hanging over them both.

Based on Van Gogh’s own idea, his plot and direction allowed the characters to live and breath as real people. This narrative and structural complexity afforded the film three Golden Calf awards, the coveted Dutch cinema prizes, for best director, best actress (Renée Fokker) and best actor (Peer Mascini).

A remake of this Dutch Academy Award winner stars Oscar-nominated actors Stanley Tucci – who also directed and co-wrote the screenplay of this version – and Patricia Clarkson.

These films are available for non-theatrical bookings. If you run a film society and you wish to organise a screening of either of these films, please contact, who will be happy to discuss this with you further.
