Devil Girl from Mars

Format: DVD

British science fiction cinema of the 1950s tends to be serious, paranoid stuff along the lines of the Quatermass movies but David MacDonald’s Devil Girl From Mars is a rare sly camp masterpiece to compete with the wilder American drive-in horrors like Attack of the Crab Monsters or Queen of Outer Space. Yet it’s also as British as a film can be, set almost entirely inside a dingy Scots pub which is invaded by a leather-caped-and-cowled dominatrix from another world and a robot which looks like a 1950s fridge on stubby legs.

Nyah (Patricia Laffan), weary of the exhausted males of Mars, comes to Earth in search of virile Scotsmen to repopulate her home planet, but meets surprisingly stern resistance from the boozers – perhaps because the womenfolk of Earth are beguilingly represented by Hazel Court and Adrienne Corri. With John Laurie of Dad’s Army as the tippling landlord, this is a chatty comedy of interplanetary courtship – based on a play, which would probably be worth reviving – that nevertheless has a certain nightmarish edge as the pettish, frustrated villainess curls her lip and considers deploying her fearsome clunkbot and flying saucer-mounted death ray to enforce her will on the Earth.

Devil Girl from Mars

This British B-movie cult classic stars Patricia Laffan as a vinyl-clad, raygun-toting Martian on the hunt for Earthmen to repopulate her home planet; John Laurie, Adrienne Corri and Hammer Horror queen Hazel Court star among her human victims in this cult classic from the Danziger brothers. Devil Girl from Mars is featured here in a brand-new transfer from original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

On a winter evening, assorted guests are at their supper in a remote Scottish inn. Suddenly, a brilliant light descends; a spaceship has landed on the moors, and the group are trapped within an invisible wall surrounding the house and garden. The invader is Nyah, a pitiless dominatrix whose powers are demonstrated through a robot under her control. With every Martian male wiped out in a definitive battle of the sexes, she has been sent to Earth to capture suitable breeding stock. As their escape attempts meet with icy contempt, the helpless humans must decide who will die to save the others… and possibly the world!
