Wombling Free: Special Edition
This live-action, musical extravaganza was a smash on its original 1977 release, as the nation was in the grip of Womblemania. The self-sustaining, eco-friendly Wombles – famed for picking up litter left behind by humans and turning it in to something useful, even created a media storm as fans littered Wimbledon Common hoping to catch a glimpse of a real-life Womble!
On the back of this furore came Wombling Free. Containing the songs of composer/musician Mike Batt (Watership Down, The Dreamstone) and based on the perennial favourite children’s stories by Elisabeth Beresford, Wombling Free contains the vocal talents of some of the UK’s best loved actors, including David Jason (Only Fools and Horses, A Touch of Frost) and Jon Pertwee (Dr Who, Worzel Gummidge). Wombling Free was also written and directed by Lionel Jeffries (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Quatermass Xperiment), and features Kenny Baker, (Star Wars, Time Bandits) in the role he featured in prior to starring in Star Wars as everyone’s favourite robot - R2-D2.
Only able to be seen by those who believe in them, the Wombles are amazed when young Felicity ‘Kim’ Frogmorton (Bonnie Langford – Dr Who, Just William) invites them to her birthday party. With rumours of The Wombles existence circulating, a public meeting is set up to prove once and for all that the Wombles exist, and they should be helped in their crusade to clean up the world. But on the day of a meeting a storm breaks out…
Wombling Free will appeal to those young-at-heart, and anyone with fond memories of Bagpuss and The Clangers.
This special edition contains the original theatrical trailer and archive interviews with Bonnie Langford, David Tomlinson and writer/director Lionel Jeffries.
